“This is a lion portrait with the ‘ Wow!’ factor. Quite a spine-tingling expression in his eyes, he really makes an impression!

I have called him Aurelius, meaning ‘The Golden One’.

The background is made up of several layers of a rich transparent maroon brown applied over a black base layer. This gives a nice tonal vibrant feel and brings the painting together.

Closer up you can see the texture and brush strokes in gold, brown and maroon, with shining creamy highlights. There are also little touches of blue, purple and teal in the shadows. Step back, and the lion’s watchful eyes follow you around the room! ” _Sue

Below is a time-lapse video showing all of the stages of this painting from start to completion. Oil paintings often take weeks, because of the days of drying time in between layers of paint. Aurelius took around one month to complete
